Is it when:
a.) a former city councilwoman runs for justice of the peace on the theme “A vote for me is a vote for swift Republican justice.”
or when,
b.) she is (barely) beaten by a former police lieutenant who, in the article the next day, says in regards to the election: “I give God the glory for this. I feel the Lord has led me to this spot.”
Hmmm? Boots in the night, anyone?

So, as I was procrastinating today, I happened to look at a blog to which my friend Rex contributes. There I discovered a fun little meme, “the four subjects of X” as in the four subjects of poetry, the four subjects of linquistic analysis, and the four subjects of anthropological research.
I shall leave aside the whole four horsemen of the apocalypse reference, and leap immediately into ta-da! the four subjects of sociological inquiry:
1.) It turns out that when you have money, that’s really great for you, and when you don’t have money? Dude, that like sucks. Just like it sucks to be black in America. Or a woman pretty much anywhere.
2.) Oh, and by the way? Being black is not the same as being poor. Or a woman. Or gay. Not the same thing at all — no way, no how. Every kind of oppression is like a snowflake, you know? Unique and shit.
3.) You know that after-school special that said you can be anything you want to be? Total fucking lie. Well, not _totally_ a lie. But pretty much. There’s like this thing called “structure,” see, and sometimes things happen to us whether we want them to or not.
4.) Bishop Berkeley was right, and Dr. Johnson totally didn’t get it. The world and everything about it — including all three points listed above – is inside your head. Dude! That’s like, hella trippy when you think about it.

So it will not surprise you, I hope, to learn that I attended Fort Worth’s immigration rally. I think that fascist fishwrap the Startlegram underestimated the attendance — but I’m not really sure by how much, so I guess it’s a moot point. Along with some Tejano Democrats and other Stonewallers, we registered a couple hundred new voters. So, a good day’s work for democracy-building, I should think.
The most surreal moment in the march, however, was when they blared Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American” over the speakers. In what universe does this make sense? Everytime I think I’ve heard it all, the irony-free bizarreness of Texas slaps me upside the head. My partner tried to tell me this was “transgressive” — as in, Mr. Greenwood, and no doubt most of his typical listeners, would be totally befuddled at the reappropriation of their ur-text by a bunch of g*da*ned wetbacks. To which my reply is: it may be “transgressive” when Tom of Finland reappropriates jackboots and Wehrmacht caps, but that doesn’t mean the symbolism isn’t still tainted by association.

My calendar says it been 15 years. Are there any plans for a reunion?
